The materials that make up the subsoil of the Pays de Langres have naturally dictated the economic activity of certain villages. In the case of Provenchères-sur-Meuse, it was the strength of the sandstone that made it possible to manufacture whetstones, which were extracted from a number of quarries. This example of a grinding wheel is a tribute to the quarrymen of yesteryear.
