Located 600m south of the city walls, the citadel was designed to block and protect access to the north of the Langres plateau. Built in 1842, it was intended to compensate for the defensive deficiencies of the latter, whose ramparts were modernised at the same time. In 1888, the western part of the citadel was renamed the Quartier Turenne. In the event of conflict, the Langres fortress was intended to assemble and support armies that might have manoeuvred between the Vosges and the Jura. In this scenario, the reserves accumulated inside the citadel were intended to supply 18,000 men and 1,000 horses for six months.
