Probably built by Jean d'Amboise, Dean of the Chapter and then Bishop of Langres from 1496 to 1510, it is the earliest known example of Renaissance architecture in Langres. Its bas-relief sculpted pilasters and frieze, bearing the coat of arms of the d'Amboise family, are borrowings from the Italian Renaissance. The original roof was probably more slender, with dormer windows, in keeping with the Gothic aesthetic still in vogue. This façade, which originally overlooked a vast garden stretching as far as the cathedral, has been visible since the street was opened up at the beginning of the twentieth century, and its contemporary name is due to the Marquis de Rose, who owned it in the mid-nineteenth century.
