The place known as "le fourneau" ("the furnace") bears witness to the establishment of a blast furnace, just outside the village of Thonnance-lès-Joinville, on what is now the D60 towards Montreuil and Saudron. Its origins date back at least to the 17th century, when it belonged to the Bishop of Châlons. A second blast furnace was added around 1858.

Today, the former workers' accommodation and the old coal shed have been preserved.
