Together with Fort de la Bonnelle, it helped to protect the plateau to the west of Langres; by combining its fire with that of Fort Saint-Menge, it controlled the Marne valley and the road to Chaumont. Small in size and relatively close to Langres, it occupied a height that had already been identified as important in the first plans to transform the square in 1868. Its compact size meant that the gunpowder magazine was located very close to the barracks. Covering an area of 13 hectares, it could accommodate 350 men.
The Fort is no longer open to the public.
However, the fort is now home to a large antique and second-hand goods shop, open all year round, every Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm in the courtyard of the Pointe de Diamant fort.
