This ring fort was responsible for controlling the Dijon road and the Langres plateau to the south-west of the citadel.
A cavalry fort, it offered two levels of fire; it was equipped with a vast two-level longitudinal barracks opening onto a vast courtyard. Initially bastioned, it was radically modified after the 1870 war; in order to rectify the layout of the front and side faces, part of the ditches were vaulted! A rare feature of the fort are the vast storage rooms, which are still preserved and offer unrivalled volumes.
Fort de la Bonnelle is one of the few structures in the Languedoc region to have engaged in an artillery duel with Prussian troops in November 1870.
