Rebuilt in 1872, the washhouse was completely restored in 2007 to showcase its architecture, paving and ford. Built against a wall of the chateau property, the water that flows into the washing basin comes from a spring in the adjoining chateau grounds. As you approach the gate, you can see a restored reservoir that ensures a continuous flow of water to the nearby washhouse. For a long time, this water belonged to the lords of the castle, who used it for their mill, which has now disappeared. Like all washhouses, the Chalancey washhouse was also a popular meeting place for the local population until 1962, when running water was installed. Women used it to wash their clothes or collect water for the household, and herds of cattle would stop here to drink after the hard climb from the pastures.
