Fontaine de Lezéville

Fontaine de Lezéville

  • photo

Situated in the centre of the village of Lezéville, a stone's throw from the town hall, a monumental cast-iron fountain adorns the square. It consists of a circular basin 4 metres in diameter and a central statue standing on a plinth. This female statue is that of Ceres (sometimes likened to Demeter), goddess of the harvest and agriculture, recognisable by the sheaf of wheat she holds up in one hand and the sickle in the other. At the foot of the statue, a child is embracing a goose (or swan?).
According to the inscription on the basin, it was cast by Marcel Colas, a master forger from Montiers-sur-Saulx (Meuse).
