A place of solitude and enchantment, this spot in the middle of the woods is a former hamlet of Varennes-sur-Amance, which at its peak had around sixty inhabitants. In the depths of the wood, one of many legends is attached to the hell spring. Later, Marcel Arland would give the place known as Bouillevaux its title of nobility with a literary account entitled "Zélie dans le désert" ("Zélie in the desert").
