FONTAINE D'AUNOT DE SOMMANCOURT

FONTAINE D'AUNOT DE SOMMANCOURT

This beautiful semi-buried washhouse, located on the outskirts of the village in a green setting, was built in the early 19th century from ashlar and restored a few years ago. Fed by a natural spring, it operated for three months of the year to crush and wash the ore. It was operated by a certain Clausse, a forge master. The clean ore was then sent to the Sommevoire forges to be transformed into metal. The washhouse was also a meeting place for the washerwomen who came to wash and rinse their clothes. Today, the place invites you to daydream; you can easily imagine the past life of the Aunot fountain.
