The original fountain was built in the 13th century. At the time, it consisted of a well, a drinking trough, a wash-house and a ford, which has now disappeared. Legend has it that Thibaud IV, King of Navarre, made his horse drink here, hence the name of the structure. Today, the water gushes out of the mouth of a cast-iron monster into a square basin, and then flows into two large troughs. The whole structure is supported by a stone retaining wall.
