Eglise Sainte-Madeleine de Chézeaux

The church of Chézeaux was the seat of a parish administered by the prior of Varennes. The seigneury and tithes were shared between the prior of Varennes and a layman. It would appear that Sainte-Madeleine church was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century after its destruction during the Thirty Years' War, as evidenced by the date 1699 inscribed on the pediment of the bell tower portal. The single nave is covered by exposed beams and panelling. It is preceded by a bell tower-porch crowned by a square slate spire. The choir, rebuilt between 1825 and 1828, has two cross-vaulted bays and ends in a flat chevet against which the lean-to sacristy is built. The bell tower is built of rubble with an ashlar chain and the rest of the building is of ashlar.
