Saint-Mathieu church was rebuilt between 1848 and 1849 to plans drawn up by architect Paul Péchiné in December 1847. It is a homogeneous structure, using the neo-Gothic-Ogival repertoire even in its furnishings. The bell tower was toppled by a hurricane on 22 March 1851. The contractor and Paul Péchiné were found guilty of shoddy workmanship, and the architect Barbier was appointed to oversee the reconstruction of this section.

The elongated building has a nave with three ships of five bays, preceded by a bell tower-porch crowned by a square spire and four bell towers of the same shape covered in tortoiseshell tiles. The bell tower is flanked at its base by two secondary chapels and houses the organ loft on the first floor. The choir consists of a straight bay followed by a three-sided apse.
