Marnay was a parish with a girls' school, founded in 1848 by the Royer couple and run by the Sisters of Providence from Langres.
In the deanery of Is, the church, dedicated to Saint Martin, was the seat of a parish administered by the abbess of Poulangy.
Built in the 13th-century Gothic style, construction began on 15 August 1854, as indicated by a foundation stone visible on the east façade near the north-east corner of the building.
There are two engraved stones on either side of the portal.
The one on the left indicates that it was laid by Jean Baptiste Frenette, Mayor, with his deputies and members of the town council. The one on the right indicates that it was consecrated on 1 June 1858 by François Victor Lamy, the parish priest.
