EGLISE SAINT-MARTIN DE CHOIGNES

The church at Choignes had been the seat of a parish administered by the abbot of Val-des-Echoliers since it was transferred in 1460, along with Vouécourt, by a Papal Bull issued by Pope Pius II.
The church of Saint-Martin dates back to the 13th century, but the vaults in the nave were destroyed or never rebuilt. It houses some very fine furnishings: altarpieces depicting the lives of the Virgin and Saint-Nicolas dating from the 16th century, fresco paintings and bas-reliefs under the porch discovered in 1837 when the building was restored, etc.
The bell tower, with its staircase in the nave, was added to the crossing in the 15th century. The arms of the transept and the sacristy were built in the 1st half of the 16th century, which blocked off the bays in the bell tower.
The porch and the sacristy with its portal date from the 19th century. In December 1875, the architect Dupuy drew up a plan to create the portal between the choir and the sacristy and to place the confessionals in the sacristy and the north arm of the transept.
