Around 1165, the Bishop of Langres, Gauthier, ceded Tornay to the Abbey of Belmont. On the eve of the French Revolution, the tithes were shared between the seminary of Langres, the abbess of Belmont, the local parish priest and a layman. The church at Tornay was the seat of a parish administered by the abbess of Belmont.
In 1851, architects Barbier and Sauvestre drew up plans for a partial reconstruction of Saint-Loup church. According to these documents, the nave was to be partly preserved (but its vaults were replaced by new ones made of tufa), the choir was to be rebuilt but opposite the old one, and the tower-porch raised on the site of the old choir. The new chancel was to be segmental and integrated into a bay of the old nave, but this was not the case, as the current chancel is barlong in plan. The ashlar was taken from quarries known as Charmiron or Futtes.
