The church of Chalindrey was the seat of a parish administered by the Chapter of Langres, with Le Pailly and Culmont as branches. Saint-Gengoulf church has a nave and a bell tower dated 1773 (dated foundation stone in the west face of the tower).
The building has a Latin cross floor plan, with a nave of four bays flanked by two side aisles, each of which is reduced to a single aisle. The side aisles are divided and vaulted with transverse barrel vaults. The bell tower, which houses the font chapel on its ground floor, is attached to the south side of the nave, at the level of its second bay. It is crowned by a polygonal slate spire. The spiral staircase is set into the corner formed by the tower and the top of the nave. The nave has a single roof. The projecting transept has two-bay cross-vaulted arms. The first bays, framing the crossing, are aligned with the side aisles and their east walls open onto chapels (which also open onto the choir). The chancel consists of a straight bay and a three-sided apse covered by a six-quarter rib vault. The choir and transept were rebuilt in 1858. The sacristy, accessible from an annex adjoining the north chapel, lies to the north-east of the choir. The nave and bell tower are of ashlar, while the eastern sections (chancel and transept) are of rubble with ashlar buttresses.
The choir was completely redesigned in 1976. The side chapels and those in the transept bear witness to the décor after 1858. In the south arm, the chapel of St Vital houses the martyr's shrine, a pilgrimage destination from 1777 to the 20th century. The stained glass window features 3 paintings (the donation by Pius VI, the transfer of the relics and the healing of pilgrims). A high relief (Chevillon stone) recounts the martyrdom. The altar (1880) displays the papal donation plaque (1775 - Carrara marble, ISMH). The chapel in the north arm is lit by a stained glass window showing the apparitions of La Salette, Lourdes and Paray-le-Monial. The stained glass windows in the side chapels depict the rosary and, less commonly, the presentation of Jesus in the temple.
Free admission all year round.
