The term ‘spillway’ actually refers to the Marne waterfall situated at the entrance to the village, near the stone bridge spanning the river. This man-made feature may be linked to the presence of an old mill, a water intake intended to supply a factory – perhaps a cutlery workshop or a forge – or even an earlier modification to the course of the Marne.
The watercourse is now home to a wealth of biodiversity, including amphibians, numerous fish and underwater flora. These natural treasures provide compelling arguments in favour of preserving the weir and the watercourse.
