Situated at the junction of two streets, this stone winegrower's cross forms an attractive ensemble, with a stone trough, now in bloom, and a wheel pump. The cross stands on a rectangular pedestal with a cornice. The first third of the column is decorated with a climbing vine along the shaft. The cylindrical column, with an undecorated collar at the base, supports a simple, recently restored bare cross without a capital. |Concerning the side pump: In 1899, Boucheseiche, the village mayor, studied the possibility of equipping Varennes with rosary pumps. One of these was tested on a communal well in the church square. In response to positive feedback from residents, who appreciated the ease of use and efficiency of these devices, the local council decided to order five new pumps in 1902. Placed in wells in five different squares in the village, they provided many services to the population. Other pumps, of the "Morin-gra" or "Nordas" make, were later added. Most of them are still in place.
