On this cross, erected in 1878 by the inhabitants of Provenchères, only the first part of the Latin phrase appears:
‘O Crux ave, spes unica’
‘Hail, O Cross, our only hope’
Here, the cross stands at a crossroads; it guides the traveller and protects them from the unknown and from ill-fated encounters. It symbolises the community’s act of faith.
