In 1836, Aspasie Petit, from Courcelles-sur-Aujon, founded the Convent of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Saint-Loup. A few years later, she became the Superior under the name of Mother Marie de Jésus.
The establishment was designed to take in young girls from all over the region for instruction and education. The school had an excellent reputation. This mission was to be fulfilled for 130 years. In 1966, this congregation merged with that of the Filles de la Sagesse, whose mother house was in Saint-sur-Sèvre. The convent became a retirement home for both orders. For the last fifteen years or so, it has also been home to the Annonciades nuns from Langres who have left their monastery.
The convent opened its doors on National Heritage Day, giving visitors the chance to explore its magnificent gardens. Two sculptures have been listed as Historic Monuments since 1994: the statue of Saint John and the Virgin of Sorrow, both dating from the 16th century.
This community of nuns from every continent occupies this place, and not without sharing. Although dedicated to a contemplative life, the nuns are very welcoming, and the convent garden remains a place that is accessible to walkers.
