Until the Revolution, the ramparts of Langres were constantly under armed guard by the inhabitants themselves. Every inhabitant of Langres aged 15 or over was enrolled in a neighbourhood militia, which stood guard every day.
To provide shelter and warmth during their rounds, the watchmen had guardhouses, often with fireplaces. Overhanging the ramparts, they could also keep watch over the base and immediate accesses. Facing the former episcopal palace, this guardhouse compensated somewhat for the lack of flanking works in this part of the enclosure.
