The fortified castle, a fief of the County of Burgundy, was built by the de Vergy family in 1240. It is surrounded by a double wall of ramparts and ditches, the widest of which surrounds the village. The Château de La Rochelle changed owners frequently. For much of the Middle Ages, the powerful Burgundian de Vergy family exercised feudal rights over a large part of the region. The castle was then destroyed and rebuilt as it stands today.
Two dovecotes frame the entrance porch.
