Clefmont Castle was probably built in the early 11th century. Today, it retains imposing vestiges of its former grandeur, with its flattened round towers, the seigniorial chapel of Sainte-Catherine with frescoes and a 16th-century dwelling that has been altered over the centuries. Originally, it looked like a fortified castle, protected by moats cut into the rock. Its well-guarded entrance gate was fitted with two imposing round towers with drawbridges. In the 17th century, the castle suffered a major fire, traces of which still remain. In the Middle Ages, the lords of Clefmont were the most important in the Bassigny region, and made numerous donations to religious establishments such as Morimond Abbey and La Crête Abbey. The first known lord of Clefmont was Simon 1st.
