The château was built on the site of a feudal castle built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries by the lords of Grancey-le-Château. This ancient medieval fortress was home to King Louis XIII and the Montespan family for several years before she moved to Versailles. It was modified in the 17th century with the construction of a wing in the extension of the dwelling enveloping the square tower and with the development of terraced gardens around the château. The gardens were modified by Baron de Chalancey in 1820 to create English-style gardens, with the addition of an artificial grotto.
Inside, the flats were refurbished in the second half of the 18th century with richly decorated alcove rooms, and the square tower features a pointed vault dating back to the 16th century. At the same time, Louis Seclier, Receiver General of Finances in Burgundy, had the dwelling rebuilt. One of the gatehouses (rue de l'aiguillon) consists of 2 towers, which were restored in 1994. It bears the date 1618 and the arms (blazon of gold with a lion of azure lampassed and crowned of gules) of Claudine d'Orge, widow of Léonard de Damas de Thianges.
Listed as a Historic Monument on 19 March 1982.
In the park adjoining the château, you will find a cooler, a hunting lodge and an obelisk.
