Chapelle des Neiges d'Odival

Chapelle des Neiges d'Odival

Chapel located near the Saint-Sulpice farm. The building was completely rebuilt in 1990-1991 by the Compagnons de Saint Eloi (altar, rustic stone, rammed earth floor with paved central aisle, vaulted pool, bare stone walls).
A cemetery surrounded the chapel, which is thought to have been used as a hospital several centuries ago to treat lepers.

In the 16th century, this chapel was a place of residence for the Duvet goldsmiths. Jean Duvet (Langres 1485-1558) was a highly reputed silversmith and a much-appreciated avant-garde engraver, known for being the first Frenchman to use the burin. Sometimes called the "French Dürer", he became goldsmith to Kings François I and Henri II. He was also responsible for the celebrations and ceremonial entrances of the King of France in Langres and Dijon. He was commissioned to create the reliquary of Saint-Lazare in 1534. He produced several series on the theme of the Apocalypse, but also on the theme of the unicorn, hence the name "Master of the Unicorn". Jean Duvet died in Avallon, just after the completion of the reliquary.
