Chapelle de Saint-Roch de Goncourt

Chapelle de Saint-Roch de Goncourt

This chapel was built in 1854 following a cholera epidemic that claimed victims in the commune.

In the 19th century, Saint Roch was considered to be the "preserver" of cholera, as well as the protector of livestock and vines. His statuary depicts him with a pilgrim's staff, a wound on his left thigh and a dog sometimes holding a loaf of bread in its mouth. A dog is said to have saved him from starvation by bringing him a loaf of bread stolen from its master every day. It also has the power to ward off the plague, typhus and Spanish flu.

Access to the area around the chapel is free, but the inside of the chapel is not open to the public.
