Calvaire d'Is-en-Bassigny

Calvaire d'Is-en-Bassigny

Situated at the eastern entrance to the village, this calvary, sheltered by 3 trees, has a square base topped by a cross. It dates from the 19th century and was intended to mark the boundaries of the parish. Its position at the crossroads of 2 streets also evokes the symbolism of the crossroads, i.e. a choice where it is easy to take the wrong direction and fall under the domination of evil powers. Crosses are placed at crossroads to protect travellers from the unknown and from bad encounters, and to protect residents from bad weather, disease and strangers.

Nearby, you can enjoy a picnic at "Les Aulnaies" (GPS: 48.024519,5.461046).
