In 1903, the city acquired a former canons' house at the foot of the cathedral. An architectural competition was launched to create a hotel for the Caisse d'Epargne. The project also aimed to regularise one side of Place Jeanne-Mance, clear the south side of the cathedral and provide direct access to the cloister.
The winning architect, Charles Danne from Dijon, took advantage of the building's location, at the corner of the square, to accentuate its imposing character. The abundant decoration is a compilation of different earlier styles: Renaissance, Baroque and Classical.
