This ZNIEFF is part of the Bois Communaux et de Plémont ZNIEFF, which includes part of the Bussières-les-Belmont Forêt Domaniale and its neighbouring woods.
For nature lovers:
This area is located on the sandstone plateaux of the Apance-Amance natural region (south-east of Haute-Marne) and covers various forest types, from acidiphilous to calcicole and from dry to very hydromorphic, established on the infra-Lias and Trias formations at the south-eastern end of the Paris Basin.
Vegetation:
The dominant forest types are mesotrophic oak-charmnut-beech woodland, alder-oak woodland along streams, acidocline oak-beech woodland and a sphagnum alder woodland located near springs. Sphagnum mosses, mosses of cold peat bogs, which are extremely rare in Haute-Marne, form specific groupings in seeps on acidic soils. The main species of interest are: winter horsetail, royal fern and spiked blechnum (two ferns that are very rare in Haute-Marne), purple epipactis (an uncommon orchid), forest lily (a mountain species), etc.
Fauna:
The massif provides nesting or feeding grounds for a large number of birds (around forty species, more than half of which are protected), an amphibian, the yellow-bellied sounder, which is listed as a vulnerable species on the French red list of fauna and has been fully protected in France since 1993 and in Europe (Habitats Directive and Bern Convention), and various protected mammals (such as the wild cat).
