Founded in 1836 and recognised as a public utility in 1859, it is one of the oldest cultural societies in Champagne Ardenne. In 1838, it created the Langres Museum, which it has regularly enriched and which was transferred to the town council in 1974. However, it retains ownership of its collections.
Despite its age, the society is very much alive, with 420 members. It publishes a quarterly newsletter, organises tours and lectures, and remains very involved in the activities of the Langres museums. It has a rich library that is open to the public.
It includes 3 activities:
1) Heritage library with a large collection of books and archives relating to the Haute-Marne and neighbouring departments. Catalogue available on the Marcel-Arland library website in Langres.
2) Organisation of visits to villages, historical conferences and symposia.
3) Publication of a quarterly newsletter and historical books
The library is open on Thursdays (except public holidays) and on the first Saturday of the month from 2.30 to 5.30 pm.
Possibility of opening on other days by appointment.
