The Courcelles-sur-Aujon orphanage was an agricultural establishment designed to take in orphaned girls from the cholera epidemics of 1854 and 1856. Run by the chaplain of the Saint-Loup convent, Pierre Devignon, the girls were taken into complete charge and received a harsh education that enabled them to become "farm maids". Today, these imposing buildings are home to the Maison de Courcelles, a venue for holiday camps, a stopover for hikers looking for accommodation, and training courses for their monitors and leaders.
