Starting from the church square and the statue of Marcel Arland (1899 - 1986), a dozen panels are scattered around the village, at places evoked in the books of the local boy. Discover Varennes-sur-Amance on a literary tour featuring watercolours by two Dutch artists in residence in the village. Each panel features an extract from the work and a watercolour by Hillegonda Van Bockhove. A selection of texts has been chosen to be as representative as possible of all Marcel Arland's writings and to encourage visitors to wander through the village.
The tour is open from April to November (every year, the literary panels are taken down in November and put back up in April to preserve the works).
Marcel Arland (1899-1986) was born in the Pâquis district of Varennes-sur-Amance, where his childhood was spent close to nature, as recounted in his book Terre natale. A writer since 1923 with "Terres étrangères", he published some forty works, including "L'Ordre", which won the Prix Goncourt in 1929. Co-director and director of the Nrf and a member of the reading committee at Gallimard, the Académie was a great discoverer of twentieth-century literary talent.
