A small village situated on the edge of the Haute-Marne, bordering the Vosges department near Grand, Morionvilliers offers visitors a glimpse into an unexpected chapter of history.
This history has – until now – failed to attract writers, and the few lines found in works on the Haute-Marne say very little about it. Nevertheless, the archives are far from silent, and the local sites still reveal wonderful traces of the past.
Starting from the current town hall, this walking tour invites you to discover the sites and monuments that have shaped the history of Morionvilliers.
You can park below the war memorial, where the village’s ‘Grand puits’ (Great Well) stood until the 19th century. Its name derives from its depth (3 m); it fed a wooden trough and was situated below a spot known as ‘la mare’, or ‘le gué’, or even, in 1812, ‘l’eguilloir’. In Lorraine, an ‘égayoir’ is a gently sloping basin, usually with a paved approach, used to refresh and care for horses by allowing them to soak their legs and hooves in the water.
