Situated on the borders of Champagne and Burgundy in the Forêt National Park, the town of Châteauvillain is nestled in a loop of the Aujon, one of the many small rivers that flow from the neighbouring Langres plateau.

Châteauvillain has a remarkable heritage. The town bears witness to an unusual history, with the remains of medieval and 17th-century castles, 12th- and 14th-century fortified walls, the Tour de l'Auditoire, which houses the town's small museum, the Logis des Broyes for temporary exhibitions, and a labyrinth of narrow streets and byways. There is also a wash-house with a floating parquet floor, the only one of its kind in France, the Maison de la Prévôté with its gargoyles, a dovecote featured by Diderot in his Encyclopédie, the Chapel of the Trinity with its tempera paintings, a former oil mill, the large covered market with its colonnades, and the Town Hall facing the Church of Notre-Dame, the façade of which was designed by Soufflot. The Porte Madame, one of the city's gates in the Middle Ages, now gives access to the Parc aux Daims, a pleasant 272-hectare walking area. Proud of its past, the town of Châteauvillain is nonetheless resolutely turned towards the future. The former "Le Chameau" industrial site, where rubber boots were made, now lives to the rhythm of artistic creation and experimentation.
