The V56, or Route de Saint-Jacques via Vézelay, is an emblematic cycle route along one of the major routes to Santiago de Compostela. It crosses France from north-east to south-west, from Metz via Vézelay, a major pilgrimage site listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to Estérençuby (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) over a distance of more than 1,580 km. This route, rich in cultural and natural heritage, follows in the footsteps of the pilgrims through a variety of landscapes: green valleys, picturesque villages, agricultural plains and remarkable historic sites. Suitable for touring cyclists, the V56 offers a great alternative to the footpath, with sections that are developed, little frequented and dotted with reception facilities. Accessible to all levels with the right equipment, it combines adventure, spirituality and discovery of the region. The Vézelay cycle route offers a unique experience combining physical effort, contemplation and encounters, in the tradition of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

The V56 passes through Haute-Marne for just over 50 km. It runs from the Meuse border to Montier-en-Der. The route passes through the town of Saint-Dizier, famous for its cast-iron art, passes Lac du Der, then heads south to Montier-en-Der, famous for its photography festival. There are 15 km left to reach the Aube département at Soulaines-Dhuys on sandy or grassy paths.
