In 764, two bishops from Langres, Erlolf and Hariolf, founded a monastery that would become the town of Ellwangen. They brought with them the relics of the Three Twins, martyrs venerated in Langres and at Saints-Geosmes. In memory of Speusippus, Eleusippus and Meleusippus, horse breeders in Greek legend, the ‘Kalter Markt’ was established in the 9th century, first mentioned in a document dating from 1353.
Every year, in early January, the largest horse market in the whole of Germany takes place, culminating in a major fair and a grand parade through the entire town.

The ‘Pourquoi pas!’ association invites you to discover this event, as well as the town of Ellwangen – twinned with Langres since 1964 – and Dinkelsbühl, one of Germany’s most beautiful towns.
