Langres has produced some great sculptors, some of whom achieved national renown: Henri Bertrand (1759–1834),
Edme Gaulle (1769–1841), Joseph Lescornel (1799–1872)… Whether they are already well known or await renewed
scholarly attention, they nevertheless cast a shadow over another sculptor of merit: Antide Péchiné (1855–1929). A forgotten and little-known sculptor, some of whose works have been mistreated by later generations, he had never been the subject of any research. Yet he features prominently in Langres’ museum collections, having made a significant donation in 1924, part of which has been incorporated into the
collections of Langres’ museums. This lecture therefore aims to sketch out an initial biography of the sculptor and to attempt to understand the reasons behind an artistic career which, having enjoyed a certain degree of renown, led him to near-anonymity by the end of his career and, above all, to a state of near-poverty.
