‘I am indeed one; I cannot doubt it… (As he said this, he felt all over himself.)’ Diderot brings bodies to the fore, from *La Religieuse* to *D’Alembert’s Dream*: blind bodies, constrained bodies, bodies at liberty. He scrutinises their ‘pantomime’ in all its forms – dance, performance, the expressiveness of bodies – in theatre, in life, and in painting. The body, both an immanent given and a sensory, mental and social construct, occupies a central place in his materialist philosophy, driven by his atomist and Epicurean inspiration, nourished by medical thought, and which ceaselessly questions its ‘other’—the spiritualist religion of incarnation.
