Godzilla was the nickname my arch-enemy Thomas used to call me at secondary school. That was the turning point, the moment when my body took on a social dimension and suddenly became a problem to be dealt with, a source of concern. More than twenty years on, and despite plenty of therapy, I have to admit that this body of mine is still a concern, an issue that keeps coming back to the fore.
It is self-image that I want to talk about: the way we present ourselves to the world, the way we put ourselves on display, how we are sometimes self-conscious about our bodies, and how we try as best we can to enhance them, failing as we do to accept them completely. *Godzilla’s Revenge* is about the moment the monster decides to reclaim control over its image – and, above all, over its own self-perception – by retracing a journey that is both personal and societal.
